Our Story

Stand Out! Adaptive Adult Organization was founded in 2018 by Kayla Oakey-Horton and Olivia Jourdan. Kayla and Olivia had a vision for to create an environment concentrated on adaptive recreation. They brought the idea to the Saint Clair Shores City Council where it was green lighted! We were able to create, what is now, our annual Frosted Formal and host a few different parties in between. Due to the pandemic in 2020, the group had to pause all social gatherings. With the lift of restrictions and the need for socialization, we decided to expand our offerings in 2022. Adding Rachel Malo, Joslyn Higbie, and Emma Oakey-Horton to our team, we created consistent social opportunities with the commitment of enacting our mission; Fostering positive and meaningful connections through adaptive socialization. Our group is tailored for adults 18 years or older of all abilities.

As of now, we host events such as social nights, craft nights, adaptive workouts & adaptive yoga, as well as adaptive ballroom dancing. As a city program, we make it a priority to partner with local businesses to enrich our program and community. Our social nights have been hosted at Blossom Heath, EOS Café & Coffee House, Bruce Post VFW, and now the SCS Golf Club. These social nights offer a variety of experiences such as music bingo, trivia, and themed parties with the goal of promoting fun and friendship for all. We are partnered with CrossFit Freshwater and Shores Yoga to promote movement and exercise opportunities. To inspire creativity and utilize fine motor skills, we collaborate with the Art Shack SCS.
